Twitter faces boycott after 'inaction' over rape threats against feminist bank notes campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez

“There has been a deafening silence from Twitter. The accounts of the men who said those things are still active. There needs to be a massive culture shift at Twitter.”

https://twitter.com/CCriadoPerez

Update above . Looks like i am not the only one who has noticed this scary abuse trend on twitter .

In Internet slang, a troll  is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a forum, chat room, or blog), either accidentally or with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet)

Due to twitter really difficult block features (you need to go to the other persons profile to use the block feature) . Around the world political trolls have made twitter their new home . Twitter allows tolls to find and target dissenting voice with easy (just monitor keywords ,words on twitter). As twitter is so huge and does not have active monitors like the 1990s forums . The trolls have a great time. In fact twitter (mods, algo?) blocks dissenting voices (the abuse feature is abuse by its users) .The trolls are more vicious ,off topic, ignorant then the forum trolls (you need more tech skills to navigate a forum). Now with the mobile apps any tom dick and harry has can become a twitter trolls with 100s of accounts. Unlike the forum trolls twitter trolls are much more vicious .Unlike 3 years ago , twitter user cannot tweet in peace (you will always have some troll reply to your tweet ). A lot of users have been hurt by the viciousness spewed by the trolls . Intelligent discourse ,the techie meetups online and offline have pretty much stopped and twitter now.

Blocking does not help because someone else in your timeline could retweet the hate speech of the blocked troll . So it is almost impossible to keep out the hate speech form your timeline with twitters current block tools .

Tolls make fake account ,parody account (which do not comply with twitters rules (adding the word parody to the handle). This misleads followers into believing that it is the real person. which can have disastrous consequences ,due to the speed with which people retweet and spread information .

Facebook does not have as many trolls because of its strong block/ hide from timeline tools .

Faulty twitter suspension algo

Twitter  feels if your ration of followers are lower than the people you follow they will suspend your account stating (aggressive following behavior) . Now aggressive following behavior is good if a user follow more than 250 users in one hour. But if the user follows 450 users over one year and no followers, the faulty twitter algo kicks in and bans the user from twitter. And then it is impossible to get any respite .The message are not clear. You will get a message in your email box which looks like the one below

Hello,
We understand that you're contesting an account suspension. Please be sure to read this entire email; you will need to take further action in order to reopen your ticket and trigger a review of your account.
Twitter suspends accounts for a variety of reasons:
• If your account was suspended for aggressive following behavior, you should have received an email notification to the address associated with your Twitter account. You'll need to confirm that you've removed all prohibited following automation from your account , and will stop any manual aggressive following behavior. To expedite your appeal process, please review our Best Practices page if you haven't already, and then reply to this ticket with a confirmation that you understand our policies and will not engage in any prohibited following behavior.
• Please take a minute to review the Twitter Rules.
• If you received an email from admin@twitter.com saying 'you're being suspended' or that we're going delete your account, you're safe; the email is fake. More information here https://support.twitter.com/articles/204820-safety-fake-twitter-emails
While we strive to avoid mistakes, it's also possible that your account was suspended in error. If after reviewing the Rules, you have no idea why your account was suspended, just reply to this email indicating as much, and we'll take another look at your case. Our apologies if the error turns out to be ours.
Thanks,
Twitter Support

installing Linux Mint 15 “Olivia” Xfce on windows 7 netbook 64 bit

I had a tough time getting the boot to work .

I first downloaded the torrent (got slow internet ) from http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2391

now my netbook does not have a cd or dvd . So the only way to install it was via the usb
So i got the pendrive linux installer
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

Pen drive linux install the .iso into the usb drive

After installing it in the pen drive . I rebooted the netbook and pressed F2 to change the boot sequence .

The install is confusing. The live cd starts and you are on the linux mint desktop. On the desktop there is cd icon which has to be double clicked to install live mind. Now choose install via the first option (side by side ) did not make the netbook bootable (no grub) and it kept booting back into windows 7.

So i had to reinstall linux mint . this time choose the last option - something else . Then making a / partition /temp partition from the free space . Then it installed . But the boot was still broken.

after a lot of searching i found boot repair
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

So i again rebooted into the linux mint live cd and then from the terminal ran the boot repair tool

sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair

Then i ran boot repair

Liquid democracy is a failure most of the time

liquid democracy, is a form of democratic control whereby voting power is vested in delegates, rather than representatives
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delegative_democracy‎

liquid democracy in software development
A project shaped by liquid democracy never gets finished .

A classic example is
An European developer project called bewelcome
http://www.bewelcome.org/forums/s1785-On_groups_and_forums
http://www.bewelcome.org/forums/t263-forum
http://redmine.bewelcome.org/projects/welen/wiki/Team
http://redmine.bewelcome.org/projects/welen/wiki/Development
http://lists.bewelcome.org/pipermail/bw-dev-discussion/2013-March/010846.html

where the users brainstorm to create a better forum . But to no leadership and constant liquid democracy a simple functional forum cannot be released since the  formation of the site bewelcome.

The site was created by a group of users who did not like the leadership at Hospitality Club and Couchsurfing. And they decide their new site would not have a single leader ,but always be a group initiative. It sounded really good in the beginning ,but after almost eight years the founders and developers have not been able to event gets a function site which viet (HC) and casey (Couchsurfing) created themselves (one man armies) . The developers at bewelcome criticized the code at both these sites, but never could replicate the basic functionality of these sites.

Learning take away :- A project run on a liquid democracy system cannot achieve speed and  functionality by a single developer who is totally focused on a project .
