FLV video files do not play on VLC player in opensuse 11.4

Below is a dump of a opensuse newbie quest to find a solution by googling

I think the solution to all my video problems is codecs-gnome.ymp but i will still have to confirm this

Confirmed !! the above file installs all the required files you need to find videos and all the codecs . It may give you a warning on some files . I installed them anyway.

Do you have compiz enabled. If yes, then open VLC, goto Settings->Preferences and check the Advanced options checkbox at botton of the settings window. Now expand Video from left column and click on output modules. In the drop menu on right side, select X11 video output. Click Save button and restart VLC. Check now with the FLV files.

does not work

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

http://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/3.11.10/hplip-3.11.10.run/download

file size 20.4 MB

The source forge site is really slow and cuts off the download of hplip-3.11.10.run after 2.4 mb at times

Install VLC using YaST on opensuse 11.4

Installing VLC on opensuse is much more difficult than installing it on ubuntu .

Add VideoLAN's repository

First, add a new repository (installation source) in YaST (YaST2 -> Software -> Installation Sources)
Then, add the following Repository:
Type: HTTP / Servername: download.videolan.org /
Directory: /pub/videolan/vlc/SuSE/
Replace in the Directory above with your installed SuSE Version. Supported at this time are :
11.1
11.2
11.3
11.4
Factory

Finally, confirm the addition.

Security

The repository is signed with a GPG Key (gpg key C8DA93D2 fingerprint BC8D 780D E330 8581 B2E0 7085 33DE 8FB7 C8DA 93D2).
Accept this key in YaST and it will warn you in case there is something suspect with the repository.
Accept everything by clicking Finish.

How to upgrade dolphin from 7.0.7 to 7.0.8

1) Download   Dolphin-Patch-v.7.0.8
For those who do not use ftp . Log into your cpanel of your hosting site.

2) Upload the file  Dolphin-Patch-v.7.0.8.zip and then click and extract the file .

This will create a folder upgrade .

3) Open the folder upgrade on your site and delete the file /.htaccess from inside the upgrade folder .

4) Open your brower and go to http://yoursite/upgrade or  http://yoursite/dolphin folder/upgrade

5) CLick on upgrade

6) Open your site and click on administer (bottom right) and then go to Tools>modules and click upgrade and then recompile languages .

The last step of this upgrade is IMPORTANT. You will be given special instructions by the script which you will have to do MANUALLY.

IMPORTANT!!!
Automatic part of upgade is completed. Please do the following to complete upgrade process:

Clean /cache/, /cache_public/ and /tmp/ folders via FTP or SSH, leave only .htaccess file there if one exists

{Note you would need to change the permission to 755 from 666 if they do not get deleted}

Recompile Orca Forum language file from admin panel -> Modules -> Orca Forum -> Manage Forum (This step did not work for me as this option is not there)

    Remove /upgrade/ directory
Change the following lines in inc/header.inc.php file:
$site['ver']               = '7.0';
$site['build']             = '8';

Why SEO is useless

We assign PageRank based on links,

Here is why it is spam

SEO is all about making money not content
The guys making more links to content are not doing it to share great content (most of the time it is to share sub standard content)

This causes a guy who has not time but great content to not be able to get his content to the people would benefit from his content .

Google should be working on finding great content . Not making spend useless time trying to get links on other sites (this must have been practical 10 years ago) Now days no one wants comments with links

Why should the end user waste their time with keyword to get their great content to the right audience ? This is so wrong

http://searchengineland.com/google-says-seo-is-not-spam-98266

SEO costs money not everyone can do SEO even blogger (a google product sucks at SEO - it sucks so much that the guy who works for google below does not use it ) and people who use the google product and just write blogs get ZERO traffic (compared to those who use seo plugins on this self hosted blog The comments on this video says it all .

How to switch from self hosted wordpress to blogger

Why blogger?

Self hosted wordpress just takes too much time (too many manual updated to keep your wp files upto date / worry about security etc).

Cost of hosting/ worrying about memory issues (most hosting companies have limits to the memory they allocated to each host and they never tell you the upfront so you only learn when you site goes down wp and buddy press are resource hogs ) .Then you have to deal with your sites hosting tech support (hopefully they are not outsourcing their space - but in many countries they are outsourcing their space which means they have no idea what is happening )

http://www.christopherslade.com/2011/10/migrating-from-wordpress-to-blogger.html

http://www.staynalive.com/2011/05/why-as-developer-i-switched-to.html

blogger + your own domain costs about 25$ for FIVE years ! now that is a steal .

Draw backs - blogger does not support PDF files (posterous makes this super easy especially when you email your content and pdf files to posterous) . So if you have a lot of pdf files then blogger is not the platform for you.

When the google guy Matt Cutts does not use his own companies product and uses wordpress for his site you know the product is not really that good for seo . So when you see Matt Cutts using blogger you know blogger is not in a league with wordpress when it comes to seo ( the google team kills blogger seo big time  - you own domain help but it should be this way!!)

how photos can be made to depict anything on the net

The image in question . Some kids crossing a swollen river over a human bridge made by some soldiers .

Putting the image into google images does not pull up the correct and original photo but the keyword human bridge

The first two links are useless (is this due to google change in the algo and the stupid panda update causing site wide downgrades which hides the original site from the first page)

Visually similar images are also of no help showing incorrect crappy sites with copied images.

 -
Two incorrect labelling of the image
1) People labelling this as  Japanese army during the floods .
This when the soldiers are CHINESE from the PLA

http://www.sinodefenceforum.com/world-military-pictures/pla-photos-16-2023.html (the jinan military uniform)

2) People on facebook sharing the picture as Indian Army personnel in Sikkim .
Do these guys even know the army uniform??

This link on reddit is pretty accurate

linux distros to try if you hate ubuntu 11.10 with unity

Ubuntu with unity is totally messed up and just does not work for me . So i am on the look out for some minimalist solutions

1. Lubuntu 576 MB
Lubuntu is a lightweight Linux operating system based on Ubuntu but using the LXDE desktop environment in place of Ubuntu's Unity shell and GNOME desktop
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu

Quick links for direct Downloads of the latest version:
PC (Intel x86) desktop CD | Torrent

2.  Linux: Mageia 1  686 MB
Mageia | A New Linux Distribution
http://www.mageia.org/en/
http://www.mageia.org/en/downloads/

has had good reviews and i like the clean interface
Mageia is a fork of Mandriva Linux formed in September 2010
http://desktoplinuxreviews.com/2011/08/02/mageia-1/3/
http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/spotlight-linux-mageia-1
http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20110606

3 . Opensuse 4.3 GB (Need a fast connection to download)

http://www.opensuse.org/en/
 To download http://software.opensuse.org/114/en
you can choose from direct or bittorrent.

Negatives :-
1) during install open suse does not give you the option to choose the boot folder . It also over writes the boot loader making the other installs un-usable .
2) Its text editor kwrite is not as good as the ubuntu Gedit
3) Other partitions become unusable after its install and opensuse does not have write access to those partitions

4. http://www.archlinux.org/
Development focuses on simplicity, minimalism, and code elegance.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux

5. For linux experts backtrack linux is the best (least bloatware ) and most secure.
http://www.backtrack-linux.org/

other ones to try
NetSecL is a hardened, live and installable OS based on OpenSuse suitable for Desktop/Server

What google+ needs to be a real social network

Right now oct 15th 2011 google+ sucks and no one is using it .

The only thing people are doing is adding people to circles or clicking on +1 on posts . Some users are posting links and others are promoting their photographs

My Recommendations

1) Allow the formation of Groups (not circles ) which are publicly visible and users can join the groups/circles with any email/fb/twitter accounts (not just gmail)

2) work on different chat options pure text chat /pure voice chat/a mix of both /video chat

3) Allow streaming of blog posts (like networked blogs which is used on facebook )

4)  Incorporated options so posting on google+ can be shown on twitter and facebook (like selective tweets /hootsuite)

5) After getting the basics allow a global forum with categories for each city (down to the each street in that city (or circles instead of categories)

6) Incorporate google checkout and allow users to buy and sell globally
(paypal killer/ebay killer)

7) Incorporate google voice and allow users to use it globally
(skype killer)

Stop asking for REAL NAMES (unless you want your users to be stalked )

Changing unity desktop to Gnome3 on ubuntu 11.10

The change over was much easier than on ubuntu 11.04 (it did not break unity) .

UPDATE this maybe damage your system . It can make systems with unity sluggish and browsers do not refresh correctly .

If you do not like unity go for linux distros to try if you hate ubuntu 11.10 lubuntu or
Linux: Mageia

So under unity . Click on the ubuntu software center on the left bar and then type in gnome . Click on install. It will warn you it will remove some applets - click ok.

It takes a while for Gnome3 to download and install . After it has installed . You have to log out of the unity session . Then click the white circle next to your login name and then choose Gnome or Gnome classic . I chose Gnome Classic. To get the Firefox icon on the applet bar on the top you have to click and drag the FF icon outwards( towards the right ) and then you can move the icons to the top bar. In older versions you could just click and drag the icon to the top . Now it have to be dragged to the right before if can be taken upwards.

change dsktop from unity to kubuntu-desktop in ubuntu 11.10

UPDATE this maybe damage your system . It can make systems with unity sluggish and browsers do not refresh correctly . If you do not like unity go for linux distros to try if you hate ubuntu 11.10 lubuntu or
Linux: Mageia
 The KDE-DESKTOP

I hate the ubuntu unity desktop as the side panel is never responsive on my computer .

After googling i found

http://scottlinux.com/2011/03/05/ubuntu-11-04-change-from-unity-to-classic-gnome/

At the end steve talks about trying out the kubuntu-desktop .

So i goto the terminal and type in

$ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
this installed kde version 4.7.1

After installing . There was not info on how to change from unity to kubuntu-desktop .

All the old articles on the new said to goto system settings and the login screen . BUT there is NO loging screen in the new version of ubuntu 11.10 .

To change the desktop from unity to kubuntu-desktop you need to logout . Then you click on the wheel symbol next to your login name and then choose either kde plasma or ubuntu 2d(not tried that) .

The kde screen is nice as it looks like the windows desktop . You need to tweak it a bit to get the right feeling (of the old windows desktop)

The default screen has the desktop floating on the screen .
Right click on the screen and then click folder view
change layout from desktop to folder view

Now i have to get used to the new apps . For text editing i used to use gedit . Now the kde equivalent is Kate .

To find it (Kate - text editor)
click on the Blue K icon on the bottom left
Click the  Applications tab
click utilities
Click advanced text editor

Another change is the browser . The default browser is called rekonq (it feels a bit like opera /chrome)

but i like the  kubunutu-desktop's color settings (soothing ) blue/grey than the default unity color options (black/orange)

Update - All the applications installed under unity can be used here. Firefox is under Blue K > applications>internet  also it saves all the data you had under unity or gnome

Some issues on kubuntu-desktop
1) Tweetdeck has to be configured to be used http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/492/cpsid_49267.html (this will break the login under unity and gnome)
2) Tweetdeck links do not open in the browser
3) There is an issue with the mon updater
error when updating with monupdater This operation cannot continue since proper authorization was not provided

sudo apt-get install polkit-kde-1 (update this does not fix the error in the kubuntu-desktop )

You need to goto the terminal and type in sudo apt-get upgrade to upgrade .

The assumption had been that since kdebase-
workspace-bin depends on polkit-kde-1, KDE users would have it, and that since a lot of Ubuntu's default software depended on policykit-1-gnome GNOME users would have a policykit frontend.
 http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PolicyKit
To install the pol kit
goto blue K ->system ->right click on terminal and add it to the panel so you can get it easily when ever you need it . In the terminal type

sudo apt-get install polkit-kde-1 (update this does not fix the error in the kubuntu-desktop )

that allows unprivileged processes to speak to privileged processes.
It is a framework for centralizing the decision making process with respect to
granting access to privileged operations (like calling the HAL Mount() method)
for unprivileged (desktop) applications.
PolicyKit-Kde provides a D-Bus session bus service that is used to
bring up authentication dialogs used for obtaining privileges.
